Expertise unsurpassed, workmanship guaranteed.
Don Frosland, founder of The Furniture Clinic, has over twenty years experience in repairing and refinishing damaged furniture. Starting 2007 Don is sharing his decades of knowledge. Here is his story...
I started out in the furniture business refinishing antiques back in 1981. When I had jobs I didn't know how to repair I would call Florian, an old Austrian gentleman who retired from 20 years with Steinway Pianos, and he would show me how to do the repair. I had a customer that had a very expensive coffee table with a cigarette burn on the top. I knew I could strip and refinish the table but even that would not take care of the deep burn mark. I called Florian and he came out with me to the customer's home. He took out his pocket-knife, cleaned the burned wood out, filled it, and painted it to look like a natural knot. We were out of there in 30 minutes and the customer was very happy. I remember very clearly thinking, "That's what I want to learn."
Soon thereafter, I sold my shop and got a job working for a large furniture company for 7 years doing nothing but on-site repairs. Every day was different. Every job was different. Every day was a new challenge.
And even today, I am still learning new things. If you think you can go to a school for one week and know how to repair everything when you get home, save your money! A furniture craftsman is always learning. But I can teach you things that it has taken me years to learn. Every class will be different. We will be using real furniture to work on, not just a piece of plywood stained and lacquered. My classes are designed to teach you to repair damaged furniture, on-site, just like you would if you were in a customer's home.
